According to the World Health Organization, about 830 women die every day from preventable causes linked to pregnancy and childbirth. Maternal mortality is a major health indicator, and the direct causes of maternal deaths are well-known and, for the most part, preventable or treatable. In India, 26437 women died in 2018 as a result of poor prenatal treatment. Although maternal mortality is decreasing, it remains a critical health indicator that requires immediate attention. Also The initial 1,000 days of Newborn, from the day of conception till he/she turns two years of age, are considered as a critical ‘window of opportunity’ when poor nutrition can result in stunted growth, diminished immune response, impaired intellectual ability, poor school performance and lower economic productivity. Safe Motherhood Day 2021 provides us with the opportunity to highlight the importance maternity care practices for achieving better maternal and child health outcomes.
